One of my favourite jobs I have as a musician is working at Leaside United Church directing their youth jazz band program. I have been doing this for almost 20 years! The group is geared for wind musicians from grade 7 to grade 12, although I have taken students outside of this age range based on their commitment and experience.
My philosophy is to include musicians of all abilities by writing individual parts for each student. That way I can both accommodate and challenge all levels within one jazz band. The high school students are able to get volunteer hours to participate in this program, and there is no cost to take part!
We rehearse on Monday nights at Leaside United Church, from 7:15 to 8 pm. Our rehearsal schedule is from October 15th through to the Christmas holidays, and then we take a break for the winter then start up again in March to prepare for Spring performances. Our performance schedule is quite manageable. We perform on two Sundays in December: an evening Lessons and Carols service, and one other Sunday morning.
